Technical Test

This technical assessment was completed as part of a recruitment process for a Game Design position. It explored several areas of Game Design through practical exercises focused on competitive systems, level design, weapon design, balancing, and gameplay analysis.

The objective was to demonstrate how I approach unfamiliar design problems, structure decisions, research references, and translate analysis into concrete gameplay solutions.

Project Breakdown

My Role

I worked independently across the complete assessment, defining the design approach, researching references, documenting decisions, creating gameplay concepts, and supporting them with visual material and practical examples.

The work required switching between creative design and analytical problem-solving while keeping each solution grounded in the rules and constraints of an existing game.

Competitive Mode Design

I designed a complete PvP game mode, defining its objectives, round structure, win conditions, team flow, economy, special rules, and balancing considerations.

The process also included level flow and spatial planning, with a strong focus on creating readable objectives, meaningful decision-making, and opportunities for different strategies across repeated matches.

Weapon & Gameplay Design

I analysed gaps within the existing weapon roster and researched comparable archetypes from other games and historical references.

The goal was to introduce new gameplay options without duplicating existing roles, while considering range, damage, handling, player fantasy, balance, and compatibility with the broader combat system.

Balance & Gameplay Analysis

I also analysed a gameplay balance problem involving a character perceived as too strong by the community.

Rather than assuming the source of the issue, I structured the analysis around player data, matchups, builds, game modes, maps, ability interactions, and player behaviour to identify where the real imbalance could originate.

Iteration & Validation

Throughout the assessment, I treated each design decision as something that needed to be justified and validated.

I defined metrics and testing criteria to evaluate whether the proposed systems were working as intended, including player behaviour, match outcomes, economy, strategy diversity, and overall engagement.

Outcome

The assessment allowed me to demonstrate a broad Game Design workflow across systems, competitive design, level design, weapon design, balance, and analytical problem-solving.

It also reinforced the importance of communicating complex design reasoning clearly and turning research into practical, testable solutions.
